After spending four winters traveling around India and volunteering at a health clinic in Mysore, India, Steve Howson, Detroit MI native and New York resident was inspired to support alternative complimentary health efforts while spreading the culturally significant Indian sari to the world. I (Co-founder, Vanessa Jones) visited Steve in India while on vacation from my corporate job in New York a few years ago.
Originally from Chicago land, I've had a growing interest in Indian culture and after that first visit to India; I knew I had to go back. We went back in 2012 for four months; traveling, working on a bio-dynamic farm and spending time in villages working on Sari Sak.
Together, over the past two years we founded Sari Sak, as a way to celebrate the culture and tradition of India, while helping to employ and improve lives of local crafters in the villages outside Jaipur and
Mysore, India. We aim to reduce plastic bag use and support ecologically sustainable projects.
We use the hand skills of traditional local tailors, while training local villagers to make contemporary reusable bags and quilts made of 100% recycled Saris. Sari Sak’s goal is "to give back", starting from giving local women an outlet for their old saris as well as providing work making a beautiful product that they are proud of, and spreading beautifully handcrafted products across the world. We love handmade products made from materials with a great story and history!
We help support Jag Therapy Clinic; a non-profit, preventive health clinic located in Mysore, India. A portion of the proceeds is sent back to the community, to allow families who normally would not be able to afford treatment the ability to be treated and empowered. With an emphasis on diet, preventative exercise and nutrition; the clinic incorporates soft tissue manipulation, yoga therapy, and massage therapy using essential oils, and herbal treatment. We are also sending select village youth to the clinic to learn and bring knowledge back into their community.
